To decode function and circuitry in the nervous system, we integrate chemical, biochemical, and genetic approaches to develop new tools and methods for precise control of neurotransmission, with a special focus on next-generation optogenetics. We aim to not only provide powerful resources for the neuroscience community but also unlock the mysteries of neurotransmission in brain function and disorders. We welcome chemists, life scientists, and engineers who are enthusiastic about working at the interface of chemistry and neuroscience to join our team.

The perspective PhD student will work on a multidisciplinary project to develop a new optogenetic tool, characterize it in cell lines and cultured neurons, and ultimately validate the tool's applications in intact brain tissues. He/She will also be encouraged to identify an unsolved biological challenge and address it with the lab's unique tools/techniques.

M.S. or B.S. experienced in ONE of the following expertise:

chemical synthesis or photochemistry

molecular biology (cloning, CRISPR, or standard biochemical experiments)

molecular docking, protein design, or protein engineering

electrophysiology

imaging (acquisition and data analysis)

proteomics or next-generation sequencing

stem cell culture/differentiation

Using patch-clamp electrophysiology, pharmacology, chemogenetics/optogenetics, mouse behavior in virtual reality, virus-assisted circuit tracing, computational modeling, new two-photon imaging method, my lab aims to understand how the complexity of single-neuron computations contributes to rapidly flexible neural code for spatial navigation, learning and memory.

Your interests in the research, motivation to learn and open-mindedness are the most important things to consider. The following backgrounds or experiences are encouraged, but not required: electrophysiology (especially patch clamp), animal or imaging experiments; quantitative skills (e.g., engineering, physics or math); programming, hardware control, computational modeling. The research in the lab is both challenging and rewarding. You may gain solid foundations for understanding electrophysiological and computational principles of neurons after the trainings.

Research assistant may be expected to assist with administrative work especially during the setup phase of the lab.
