Activation of the unfolded protein response and autophagy after hepatitis C virus infection suppresses innate antiviral immunity in vitro.

Dr. Chen, Steve S.-L.
J Clin Invest., Dec 06, 2010

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major cause of chronic liver disease, with more than 170 million infected individuals worldwide . In 50%–80% of infected patients, HCV establishes persistent infection, often leading to chronic liver disease. At present, HCV isolates can be classified into 6 major genotypes that differ in their nucleotide sequences by 30%–35%, and several subtypes can be defined within these genotypes.
