急性和慢性疼痛的情緒反應在腦中樞內側痛覺系統中大部分仍無法完全解釋清楚。對於內側痛覺系統來說,內側丘腦(medial thalamus)和前扣帶皮質(anterior cingulate cortex)間的神經元已經被證明能夠處理從細胞體傳入的高閾值疼痛訊息。我們的長期研究目標是研究急性和慢性疼痛在內側痛覺系統中所傳達的情感/情緒方面的痛覺機制。最近,我們把研究的重點放在探討中樞性中風後疼痛(Central post stroke pain)的神經機制。

 

在研究丘腦-扣帶皮質(thalamocingulate)間神經網路的活性過程中,我們開發了一種新的腦切片製備技術,這其中包含了完整的丘腦-扣帶皮質傳導途徑。這種腦切片的製備可以讓我們利用活體外的方法來研究丘腦-扣帶皮質迴路中細胞的基本訊息傳遞機制。我們還發現,我們可以在這種腦切片上誘發自發性的類癲癇活動,因此,它為我們提供了一個獨特的機會來研究扣帶皮質在類癲癇反應下的細胞活動機制。也正因為如此,我們發展了另一個研究的重點在癲癇研究上。在癲癇的研究中,我們研究的目的主要是為了解決以下問題:丘腦如何調控扣帶皮質所產生的癲癇,細胞間的間隙連(gap juctions)如何參與扣帶皮質所產生的癲癇的調控,以及直流電場刺激和丘腦網狀核光刺激對於大腦皮質癲癇的是如何調控。
