Epitranscriptomic RNA modifications have recently emerged to be an important layer of regulation of viral host interactions, with the gene expression of multiple viruses regulated by RNA modifications, and some modifications shielding viral RNAs from immune detection. The current COVID-19 pandemic not only highlights the importance of basic virology research, but the BioNTech and Moderna RNA vaccines also showcases the practical use of RNA modifications to prevent immune destruction of RNA vaccines.

The Tsai lab is looking for highly motivated problem solvers to join our quest in exploring epitranscriptomic RNA modifications in Influenza A virus & Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1). For details, see: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41579-020-0382-3

Work in the lab is expected to be highly diverse and mostly molecular, including DNA molecular cloning, tissue culture of viruses, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing, protein and RNA purification work, and computational analysis of next gen sequencing (NGS) results. Prior related experiences preferred but not required.

徵求有興趣探索病毒RNA修飾的研究夥伴一同來了解RNA修飾對病毒基因表現的調控與其延伸應用。目前已知RNA修飾可調控多種病毒的基因表現,並已有少數報告顯示RNA修飾可調控細胞分辨本體與外來病毒RNA。近期COVID-19疫情不但凸顯了病毒研究的重要性,最近上市的輝瑞/BNT和Moderna的SARS-CoV-2 疫苗以人工pseudouridine修飾防止細胞攻擊疫苗中的RNA的應用例子更是RNA修飾的重要應用例子。本實驗室將針對流感病毒A (Influenza A virus, IAV) 與人體免疫缺乏病毒 (HIV-1) 兩種病毒來研究RNA修飾對病毒複製與免疫辨識的影響。詳情請參考:https://www.nature.com/articles/s41579-020-0382-3

實驗室常用技術包含基因轉殖、細胞與病毒培養技術、CRISPR/Cas9基因編輯、RNA蛋白質交互作用檢驗(如PAR-CLIP)與次世代定序(NGS)資料的電腦分析。英台雙母語的蔡老師也會樂於幫實驗室同仁練習英文寫作或演講。有足夠資料可報告之實驗室成員將被鼓勵參加如美國病毒學會或RNA學會年會等國際研討會。

Preferred candidates should be active problem solvers, either though asking collages, reading papers, or designing experiments to obtain answers. Taipei is a great city for specialty coffee lovers and outdoor activity enthusiasts. The PI is Taiwanese-American and welcomes talents of all nationalities as long as the candidate can communicate in English.

We are currently looking for one PostDoc or Graduate level research assistant (RA with a Master’s degree). RAs who wish to transition to a graduate program abroad in 2-3 years are welcome.

The research involves learning how to make liposomes, load different cancer drugs into the liposomes, how to characterize the liposomes, and investigate the in vitro and in vivo anticancer activity of the liposomes.

We develop next-generation optogenetic tools for neuroscience applications.  This is a highly cross-disciplinary research field.  We integrate concepts and techniques in chemistry, bioengineering, biophysics, and neurobiology, aiming to enable precise and remote manipulation of complex neurotransmission in the brain.

Your interests in the research, motivation to learn and open-mindedness are the most important things to consider. The following backgrounds or experiences are encouraged, but not required: electrophysiology (especially patch clamp), animal or imaging experiments; quantitative skills (e.g., engineering, physics or math); programming, hardware control, computational modeling. The research in the lab is both challenging and rewarding. You may gain solid foundations for understanding electrophysiological and computational principles of neurons after the trainings.

Research assistant may be expected to assist with administrative work especially during the setup phase of the lab.
